While Marlborough basked under blue skies throughout summer, the fruit on the vines was developing into something magical. Week after week of warm, dry weather followed on from a cooler than average start to the season. The long warm ripening season ended in a beautiful Indian summer perfect for these Bordeaux varieties. We hand-picked perfect physiologically ripe grapes at a low yield of 700g/vine.

Hans’ Comment:

Perfectly healthy, destemmed grapes allowed for a long cold soak to extract the superb flavours and beneficial antioxidants of the skins. I then let the must naturally progress through a long wild yeast fermentation and extended post maceration. After gentle pressing, the young wine was transferred into partly new French Barriques where it underwent the second natural malolactic fermentation. The minimal oxygen exchange over a long 30 months of maturation in the same barrels made all the difference. The wine and wood had time to marry together to form a richer, more complex and textured wine, able to age for many years in the bottle. We like you to enjoy this stately flagship wine at its full potential, very much like a “Grand Cru” Pomerol with many years of bottle ageing. And so we did, under perfect condition in our barrel hall for a further 3 years but without the hefty price tag! No fining. No filtration. Natural goodness.

Syrah is a labour of love for us here at Te Whare Ra. There are very few producers in the area who make this variety – so it is a bit left field for Marlborough – but our site is warmer than many, which means we have the length of growing season required and our soil type is well suited.

This Syrah exhibits fragrant notes of mulberry, black pepper and violets with some complex savoury notes and hints of coffee and spice. The ripe, supple tannins combine with concentrated flavours of mulberries and omega plums and spice. The palate carries onto more savoury and complex flavours and finishes with a lingering persistence of fruit, fine tannin and well integrated oak.

Average price per bottle was $38.70 now $32.90

WINE TASTING NOTES:

Giesen Organic Syrah – This limited edition organic Syrah is from the Southern Valleys, from high-density, certified organic vineyards. Every attention is lavished upon our organic vines which are hand tended, picked and sorted. An intriguing, elegant Syrah with violet floral on the nose, followed by layers of dark blackberries and juniper offset by earthy, smokey character framed by a dash of oak and spice.

Dog Point Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc – Pale straw in colour. Pure focused fruit aromas of ripe citrus, white peach, a pleasant fragrance of white blossom. An underlying yeast influence is attained from a naturally occurring fermentation in old oak barrels for a period of 18 months. A complex full bodied style of Sauvignon Blanc with a chalky minerality and fresh herbal influence, complimented by a slightly funky reductive edge.

Zephyr Chardonnay – The colour is bright green, straw. Nose is spice, citrus, lemon, mealy, subtle funk. The palate is texture, phenolics, chewy onion skin and oak spice.

Saint Clair Block 3 Sauvignon Blanc – Green capsicum with layers of freshly cut jalapeno and tropical passionfruit notes. A mineral and salty richness lead to a long lingering finish.

Lawson Dry Hills Reserve Pinot Noir – This wine offers a complex array of aromatics ranging from dark, berry fruits through to savoury forest floor characters. The palate is softy and silky with exuberant berry and cherry flavours. This wine has a full mid-palate, good length and a rich, flavoursome finish.

Astrolabe Albarino – A fresh, lively palate with white peach and tropical flavours, medium body and length and a chalky, mineral finish.

A 6-pack selection of our favourite Marlborough wines:

Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc / Toi Toi Brookdale Reserve Pinot Gris / Marisco The King’s Bastard Chardonnay / Hunters Rosé / Nautilus Southern Valleys Pinot Noir / Stanley Estate Lagrein

Average price per bottle is $31.63 now $26.88!

TASTING NOTES:

Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc – Imagine yellow-fleshed peaches, rock melon and blackcurrant – a sponge cake with lemon icing, chamomile and hints of rose petal. This is a delicately perfumed and deliciously ripe-fruited interpretation of Marlborough sauvignon blanc. The palate is both subtle and textural, showing considerable ripeness and concentration, with a crisp and long, juicy  finish.

Toi Toi Brookdale Reserve Pinot Gris – This wine is elegant all round, from it’s pale straw hue to it’s mouth filling, richly textured finish. On the nose it displays lifted lime flower, white peach, pear and ginger with intense flavours encompassing white peach, mandarin and nougat.

Marisco The King’s Bastard Chardonnay – The cool climate nature of this wine is stated by aromas of nectarine, lemon pith and underlying oak. The palate starts strong with stone fruit flavours backed up by a subtle creaminess. Secondary characters of flint and toast help to create interest on the palate while a typical Marlborough acidity draws out the palate with a salivating finish.

Hunters Rosé This Rosé is made in a vibrant, fruit driven style. Lashings of fresh raspberry, peach and nectarine make the wine supremely drinkable. The palate is unctuous, juicy, and dry to taste. We are proud that this wine is Certified Vegan by the NZ Vegetarian Society.

Nautilus Southern Valleys Pinot Noir – The Nautilus Pinot Noir is dark ruby in colour. The nose reveals lifted floral aromas, ripe wild blackberries, cherries and spices. The palate is medium bodied with good structure. Refined and balanced, this elegant wine shows good intensity and a lengthy finish.

Stanley Estate Lagrein – A quality, fruit driven wine, with a palate of Black Morello cherries, red plums, hints of Liquorice, tobacco, leather and vanilla. Soft on the nose, the effect of the oak maturation is subtle and noticeable, giving the wine balance, depth and structure with strong silky tannins and a spicy finish.
