Te Whare Ra Syrah

Syrah is a labour of love for us here at Te Whare Ra. There are very few producers in the area who make this variety – so it is a bit left field for Marlborough – but our site is warmer than many, which means we have the length of growing season required and our soil type is well suited.

This Syrah exhibits fragrant notes of mulberry, black pepper and violets with some complex savoury notes and hints of coffee and spice. The ripe, supple tannins combine with concentrated flavours of mulberries and omega plums and spice. The palate carries onto more savoury and complex flavours and finishes with a lingering persistence of fruit, fine tannin and well integrated oak.

Hans Herzog “Spirit of Marlborough”

While Marlborough basked under blue skies throughout summer, the fruit on the vines was developing into something magical. Week after week of warm, dry weather followed on from a cooler than average start to the season. The long warm ripening season ended in a beautiful Indian summer perfect for these Bordeaux varieties. We hand-picked perfect physiologically ripe grapes at a low yield of 700g/vine.

Hans’ Comment:

Perfectly healthy, destemmed grapes allowed for a long cold soak to extract the superb flavours and beneficial antioxidants of the skins. I then let the must naturally progress through a long wild yeast fermentation and extended post maceration. After gentle pressing, the young wine was transferred into partly new French Barriques where it underwent the second natural malolactic fermentation. The minimal oxygen exchange over a long 30 months of maturation in the same barrels made all the difference. The wine and wood had time to marry together to form a richer, more complex and textured wine, able to age for many years in the bottle. We like you to enjoy this stately flagship wine at its full potential, very much like a “Grand Cru” Pomerol with many years of bottle ageing. And so we did, under perfect condition in our barrel hall for a further 3 years but without the hefty price tag! No fining. No filtration. Natural goodness.

Saint Clair Rapaura Reserve Merlot

From a single vineyard at Rapaura, on the northern side of the Wairau Valley, the 2019 vintage (4*) has deep, purple-flushed colour. Well worth cellaring, it is full-bodied, with strong, fresh, plummy, gently spicy and nutty flavours, a hint of liquorice, supple tannins, and a smooth finish. Best drinking 2022+.

Hunter’s The Chase Marlborough

A well-balanced blend of Pinot Noir and Merlot shows a full palate with soft plum-like fruit flavours.
Flavours of plum and sweet berries show through on a palate that is structured with soft, fine tannins with a good balance between the oak and fruit.

The wonderful dark purple colour of this wine is a tastebud sensation! Sweet and savoury like a Black Forest Gateau in a bottle! Wonderful aromas of dark chocolate, juicy ripe plums, sweet Damson plums and prunes with spicy undertones. There is a hint of black pepper, tobacco, Mediterranean herbs and liquorice. A flavour powerhouse and a highly complex wine with a great lively acidity, structure, soft tannins and a lingering finish. This is a wine built to last.

Stanley Estate Lagrein

A quality, fruit driven wine, with a palate of Black Morello cherries, red plums, hints of Liquorice, tobacco, leather and vanilla. Soft on the nose, the effect of the oak maturation is subtle and noticeable, giving the wine balance, depth and structure with strong silky tannins and a spicy finish.

Spy Valley Syrah Marlborough

Aroma – Aromatic herbs- rosemary, lavender and basil overlying plum, red-berry and liquorice notes.
Palate – Supple and fine-grained, this medium-bodied Syrah shows an elegant expression of fruit, darker notes of liquorice and tar, and a complexing array of floral and dried herb characters.
Cellaring – Our Syrah responds well to cellaring. Its fresh character will slowly mellow and complex, feel confident to leave it to at least 2024.
